If you aren’t used to isometric strategy games, you may find the movement controls a little awkward at first, but these become second nature soon enough. Personally, it’s better to take your time and not fall than to make a false move and have to start from floor one again. I did find however that the penalty for taking your time doesn’t impact the speed in which you collect as much as you would have thought. The need for charges adds an incentive to keep up the pace and action. Stringing several moves and attacks together in quick succession increases your focus level, which supplies you with more shards and adds charges to your weapon, which is how you use the skills that can be purchased with said shards. You can use this to your advantage by carefully planning out your next move or next three moves. With Evertried, you dictate the pace of the game, which plays out in a turn-based fashion where no enemies move or hazards act until you have moved. For anyone who pledged, the team delivered in spades. With a small development team who are passionate and a huge backing via Kickstarter, there is always some level of expectation, and you can really see the focus and attention to detail that has gone into this game. Some of the pledge tiers offered perks such as having your name in an item’s lore or being named as an NPC, alongside a special thanks in the credits no matter what tier you subscribe to. If you fall in battle, you are sent right back down to floor one, only keeping with you any mastered skills.Įvertried is a Kickstarter-funded game, developed by Lunic Games in partnership with Danilo Domingues, who is the lead programmer of Evertried. Your job is to climb up these floors, using skills and strategically planning your movements, dashes, skills, and attacks to reach the top. These trials are set on an isometric chessboard floor, full of enemies and hazards trying to stop you. Evertried is a tactical roguelike in which you are a lost soul who must ascend a mysterious tower in the afterlife through trials. Rise again Warrior, and face your destiny.Do you like chess, but wish that you only controlled one piece that is a scythe-wielding warrior’s soul, where you navigate across a board, fighting demons, and ascend countless floors to reach the peak of the tower? You do? Well, why haven’t you ever tried Evertried? In a nutshell, you could describe Evertried as this, but it is so much more than what I’ve described. However, mastery in Skills will carry over into following runs. Upon losing all your health, the Warrior will dissipate and lose previously acquired powers, reappearing at the First Floor to start ascending again. Overcome the Guardians, Overcome Your WeaknessesĮach area ends with a Floor Guardian, a boss battle to truly prove your strategic might. Plan accordingly to increase your chance of getting to the top. Each area has a Shop Floor, where you can spend shards acquired in exchange for health recovery, Skills and Modifiers. The higher you get in The Tower, the more complex floors will become. Each area is unique and introduces new types of enemies. The Tower has 50 floors divided into 5 Areas. Skills improve and carry over into successive runs, whereas Modifiers become stronger based on your Focus Level. Don’t forget Skills and Modifiers- abilities and passive effects that can be equipped to create your build. Close the gap with a Dash - a mechanic that allows you to move twice the distance and ignore collision, allowing you to transverse an obstacle or gain a better position. Moving strategically and attacking is vital. Luring enemies to traps and getting hit by hazards will also affect the gauge, adding to the strategy. The Focus Level goes down when you are idle or just moving, so there is incentive to keep up the action. Hitting or defeating enemies in succession increases your Focus Level, which determines the shards you receive and unlocks special powers called Modifiers. Develop intricate strategies to outmaneuver your opponents and follow your path to ascension! You are the one that decides the pacing of Evertried. Alternating between moving, attacking, using your dash, skills and luring enemies into hazards is the key to success. The game plays out as fast or methodical as you want, featuring a free-flowing turn-based action combat system. In other words, everything moves after you. In Evertried, the player’s actions dictate when enemy units move.
